Musical Parenting Tip: Keep the beat to a variety of music
Why?
- Sung, chanted, or played, young children love steady beat (perhaps, due to its similarity to the heartbeat baby heard in the womb).
- Steady beat competency is an important skill for music, but also for other activities requiring regularly-paced, repeated motion (like walking, running, ball bouncing, bike riding, and using scissors)
- Steady beat competency has been linked to language/the ability to read.
- Music can be a great motivator in everyday life - and can make parenting easier!
BONUS - The brain is a pattern seeking device. By introducing your child to a variety of music, including different genres, styles, and modes, you are inviting the brain to analyze each unique musical pattern strengthening the brain's analysis skills. So play with the beat and do it using a variety of music. That's easy if you are a Kindermusik family! Enjoy the variety of music on each album from class.
How?
- Use specific songs to cue mealtime, bath time, bedtime, etc.
- Play your home CD & explore ways to keep the beat with a shaker instrument (like a Kindermusik elephant-shaker).
- Try some toddler dances!
